Applications are invited from a talented individual with strong analytical skills to join Dr Ory Schnitzer’s research group in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London as a Research Associate in the Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Physics section.

The post holder will work to develop new mathematics for nanoplasmonics, a topical field in applied physics. In particular, the post holder will seek asymptotic solutions of (PDE) eigenvalue problems governing the optical resonances of metallic nanoparticles, as well as explore the application of these solutions in nanophotonics.

The position would suit applicants interested in developing a career at the intersection of mathematics, physics and engineering.

Prior expertise in asymptotic methods and singular perturbation techniques is required. Knowledge in wave phenomena, electromagnetic theory, or fluid dynamics is an advantage.

The RA will work directly with Dr Ory Schnitzer, and join a vibrant research group with multiple academic collaborators working on related wave problems, as well as the AMMP Section within the Department of Mathematics at Imperial and colleagues in the Department of Physics.

The successful applicant will be supported in their career development with a range of formal courses and on-the-job training.

It is essential that you have :

  • The successful candidate must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in mathematics, applied mathematics, physics, engineering or closely related discipline.
  • Experience and knowledge :

  • Desire to develop asymptotic methodology to address applied problems in physics and engineering.
  • Excellent track record in carrying out original research of high quality in applied mathematics, physics, engineering or an equivalent quantitative field.
  • A strong background in asymptotic analysis and singular perturbation techniques. This may include for example matched asymptotic expansions, WKB expansions, ray methods, asymptotic evaluation of integrals, etc.
  • Good programming skills in Matlab.
  • Skills and abilities :

  • Be willing to travel and spend time overseas as part of the project.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively to a wide range of applied mathematics, physicists and engineers.
  • Ability to carry out original research and publish in high impact journals.
  • Ability to exercise initiative and judgment in carrying out research tasks.
  • Ability to prioritise own work in response to deadlines.
  • Ability to identify, develop and apply new concepts, techniques and methods.
  • Creative approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise own work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to keep accurate records of research results and activity.
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to write scientifically, clearly and succinctly for publication.
  • Ability to present research with authority and coherence.
  • Basic text processing skills.
