We will not consider any applicants who do not provide complete information for this application, including at least two letters about teaching and a cover letter describing interest in this specific position, which is a non-
tenure-track, full-time teaching position. In particular, information and letters that only address mathematical research and not teaching are not relevant to this position.
Lecturers, Senior Lecturers, and Distinguished Lecturers in the Mathematics Department at the University of Tennessee are an integral part of the educational mission of the university.
Lecturers of all ranks contribute to one of the most pedagogically innovative math departments at any major research university.
The department actively promotes professional development and values innovation; for example, several Senior and Distinguished Lecturers gave presentations on various cutting edge pedagogical methods (Flipped, GTA Mentoring, UT Math Camp) at the Joint Mathematics Meeting in Atlanta in January 2017.
Their travel expenses were entirely covered by the Department and the College of Arts and Sciences. UT Math lecturers have been involved in studying the impact of online education in entry-
level mathematics courses and the surprisingly strong connection between failure of College Algebra and failure to graduate from the University of Tennessee.
The latter study motivated the creation of UT Math Camp, which was originally proposed by the UT Math Department and announced by the UT Chancellor at the White House Education Summit five years ago.
Two lecturers served on the Task Force that subsequently created this nationally recognized program for incoming students with poor mathematics preparation.
Two math Lecturers currently serve on the University of Tennessee Faculty Senate, and others hold a variety of service roles in the Department, College, and Campus.
Several Senior and Distinguished Lecturers engage in the professional development of graduate teaching assistants as part of the departmental GTA Mentorship Program.
Others network with Math Instructors from other institutions through the MAA CoMInDS project.
Full-time lecturers have voting rights in the department, and are governed by a Lecturer Advisory Committee and Lower Division Chair who reports directly to the Associate Department Head for Undergraduate Programs.
There is a well-defined promotion ladder from Lecturer (1-year contract) to Senior Lecturer (3-year contract) to Distinguished Lecturer (5-
year contract). Lecturers receive highest priority for summer teaching assignments (before graduate students and tenure-track faculty), and it is very unusual for a lecturer not to receive a summer teaching assignment when requested.
For lecturers who want to do more than simply teach their classes, the UT Math Department is perhaps the most vibrant math department in the country.
The department seeks outstanding educators to contribute to this active teaching mission. The University of Tennessee is in the midst of an expansion and these positions fit into a long-
term growth plan. A Master’s Degree in Mathematics (not Mathematics Education) is required, and PhD in Mathematics or related area (including Mathematics Education) is preferred.
Evidence of excellent teaching in first and second-year college-level courses below (or including) STEM calculus is essential.
Evidence of activities related to pedagogical innovation and service to the institution is preferred. All appointments are 9-
month, full-time, non-tenure track at the level of Lecturer (1-year contract). In exceptional cases, early promotion to Senior Lecturer based on prior post-
doctoral teaching experience may be considered after serving at least one year on our faculty. The teaching load is the equivalent of 12 hours per semester, with reductions for administrative tasks such as coordination of courses.
Knoxville is a medium sized city with a generally progressive local government situated in the beautiful Tennessee Valley.
The climate is moderate with four distinct seasons. The city has a vibrant downtown, including Market Square, Gay Street (which includes the classic Tennessee Theater and several restaurants and galleries), and Old City.
The cost of living is relatively low, with housing options ranging from downtown condominiums to classic urban neighborhoods, to suburban neighborhoods, to rural and small-
town locales. Knoxville has an extraordinary park system for its size, with more than 50 miles of paved greenways connecting hundreds of acres of city parks and the University of Tennessee.
South of the Tennessee River, less than 4 miles from campus, is Knoxville’s Urban Wilderness, a contiguous system of parks larger than New York City’s Central Park, with an additional 50 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and trail running.
The Tennessee Valley includes many recreational lakes and is flanked on one side by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and on the other side by the geologically diverse Cumberland Plateau.
