Institute for Regenerative Medicine
Abteilungsbeschreibung / Description of UZH unit
The Institute for Regenerative Medicine (IREM) is a research institute of the University of Zurich based on the new life science campus in Schlieren.
Here, we offer a PhD position (3 years) in the group of Prof. S. Hoerstrup under the supervision of Dr. E. Fioretta.
Aufgabenbereich / Responsibilities
Candidates interested in the field of in-situ cardiovascular tissue engineering are encouraged to apply. Our group focuses on the development of tissue engineered heart valves (TEHVs) that are capable of regenerating upon implantation and compatible with minimally invasive transcatheter techniques (i.
e. : TAVI, transcatheter aortic valve implantation).
This PhD project has three major subjects :
1) the in-vitro manufacturing of the TEHV based on tissue engineering methods (scaffold preparation, cell expansion, and tissue culture in a bioreactor).
In-vitro valve functionality and durability will be determined by using state-of-the-art testing platforms.
2) the in-vitro assessment of patient-specific immunocompatibility of the valve material to gain information about the pro-
or anti-inflammatory profile of the developed TEHV. Different techniques, such as ELISA, immuno-histochemistry, and scanning electron microscopy, will be used to assess the immunocompatibility.
3) the in-vivo chronic studies in a translational sheep model to confirm valve functionality in a physiological environment and prove the remodelling potential of the prosthesis.
