The Faculty of Science and the Mathematical Institute of Leiden University are looking for an :

Assistant Professor in Quantum algorithms, Algebraic Geometry and Number Theory

Vacancy number : 18-419

Key responsibilitiesThe candidate will perform research, and contribute to the teaching tasks of the Mathematical Institute.

The candidate may also share into other responsibilities of the institute.The candidate will be appointed using financial support from the NWO Gravitation project Quantum Software Consortium,’ (see https : / / www.

cwi.nl / news / 2017 / quantum-software-consortium-receives-18-8-million-euro-in-the-gravitation-programme).Quantum Software Consortium (QSC) is a 10-

year programme funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science through the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research.

QSC is hosted by three research clusters : Leiden University, QuSoft (QuTech (a National Icon collaboration between Delft University of Technology and the Netherlands Organisation for applied scientific research TNO) and the QuTech Institute for Nanoscience at the Technical University Delft.

To strengthen this consortium we have an opening for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Leiden. In accordance with this, we search a candidate whose research will be in the area of Algebraic Geometry and Number Theory with application to Quantum Algorithms and Postquantum Cryptography.

The candidate is expected to carry out autonomous research, to supervise PhD students, to collaborate with members of QSC, in particular the cryptology group at CWI, and to apply for additional funding after an initial period.

Teaching duties in the Mathematical Institute are shared and rotate among the members of the institute. They may concern courses in the bachelor's or master's programmes in mathematics, or mathematically oriented courses for other students.

Selection Criteria

Ph.D. degree in Mathematics

excellence in research in the area as outlined, as proven by PhD thesis and publications

several years of experience at the postdoctoral level

excellence in teaching

commitment to become fluent in Dutch

Research at our faculty The Faculty of Science is a world-class faculty where staff and students work together in a dynamic international environment.

  • It is a faculty where personal and academic development are top priorities. Our people are driven by curiosity to expand fundamental knowledge and to look beyond the borders of their own discipline;
  • their aim is to benefit science, and to make a contribution to addressing the major societal challenges of the future. The research carried out at the Faculty of Science is very diverse, ranging from mathematics, information science, astronomy, physics, chemistry and bio-

    pharmaceutical sciences to biology and environmental sciences. The research activities are organised in eight institutes.

    These institutes offer eight bachelor’s and twelve master’s programmes. The faculty has grown strongly in recent years and now has more than 1,300 staff and almost 4,000 students.

  • The Mathematical Institute is one of the eight institutes within the Faculty of Science. The expertise of the members of the institute covers a broad range of topics, with a focus on Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory;
  • Analysis and Dynamical Systems; Probability Theory; and Statistics. Research is focused both on fundamental mathematics and statistics and on applications in other sciences, society and industry.

    There is a strong cohesion among the members of the institute.The Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory group coordinates the international Algant network, and plays an important role in the national DIAMANT research cluster in mathematics.

    Some members participate in the national GQT mathematics cluster. Its research tries to bridge the gap between abstract theory and the world of algorithms and applications.

    It might be viewed as number theory in the broadest sense, ranging from cryptology to arithmetic geometry and motives, with a strong emphasis on algebraic methods and a direct interest in the computational aspects of the theory.

    The group already cooperates with the cryptology group at CWI. The candidate will broaden this cooperation in the direction of quantum software.

    The Mathematical Institute offers educational programmes in pure and applied mathematics and statistics. It also offers many courses in mathematics and statistics for other academic programmes.

    Terms and conditions The appointment will be at the level of assistant professor ("Universitair Docent"). After a period of maximally five years, but likely earlier, the appointment can be made permanent ("voor onbepaalde tijd") subject to excellent performance.

    Promotion to higher ranks is not excluded, but not built into the contract. Leiden University is strongly committed to diversity within its community and especially welcomes applications from members of underrepresented groups.

    Salary range from € 3.345,- to € 5.513,- gross per month(pay scale 11 -12), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).

    Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3 %), training and career development and sabbatical leave.

    Our individual choices model gives you some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.

    Leiden University requires teaching staff to obtain the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If the successful applicant does not already possess this qualification or its equivalent, he / she must be willing to obtain this Qualification within two years.
