    Mount Isa, QLD, Australia

    Ref. No. 35315

Glencore’s Queensland Metals business operates five mine sites and processing plants plus port and logistics operations, and is a polymetallic business well placed for the future of commodities.

We are now searching for an enthusiastic, collaborative underground Mining Engineer to work in the Mid / Long Term Planning Department at our Mount Isa Copper Operation.

The Mount Isa Copper Operation includes a large sub-level open stoping operation and a geologically complex satellite sub-level cave mine.

We are currently renewing our focus on strategic / tactical planning to set up for a long and successful future. The Mining Engineers in Mid / Long Term Planning are focused on rebuilding our longer-term technical inventory, to ensure the Budget and Life of Asset schedules are supported by well thought-through, practical, productive and value creative design work.

Planned rotation through roles within the department will allow for continued development and knowledge growth, over time mining engineers in the team will be exposed to :

  • Optimising mining block designs, supporting development and infrastructure. Scenarios for different access methods and stope layouts will be tested in a mine scheduling to maximise block economics.
  • Detailed infrastructure project work to ensure optimal placement, scope and sizing of capital projects in the next 4 years to facilitate generation of maximum value from future mining areas.
  • Detailed individual stope design, along with supporting development, ventilation network and firing sequence for stopes producing in the next 2 years.
  • This will include documentation and communication of the design onwards to operational stakeholders and the Short Term Planning team.

  • Developing and maintaining cave flow model(s) for all operating cave mining blocks and future areas within the Budget timeframe.
  • Models must be reconciled against historic performance and regularly updated with actual production data.

  • Cave scenario modelling, including sensitivity analysis on factors such as draw width and material properties.
  • Participating in regular reviews of the 4 year mine schedule, addressing any opportunities or issues that require work to minimise schedule risk or maximise schedule value.
  • Ensuring the schedule accurately captures any design work completed, all required enabling tasks, and known interactions.

  • Leading contact sessions with operational stakeholders and Short Term Planning engineers to ensure the Budget schedule and design inventory are well understood, and key enabling milestones are focused upon.
  • This should include joint underground inspections to ground-truth upcoming work areas.

  • Reconciliation of assumptions used in design and scheduling work against recent actual performance, including investigating options that can be pursued to improve performance (e.
  • g. reduce dilution or overbreak).

    About You :

We are looking for degree qualified mining engineers with a solid foundation in underground hard rock mining, or mine design work, or scheduling.

Your experience will include at least 3 years’ experience at an operating mine site, ideally in Australia, meaning you have a strong understanding of the operational constraints on mine plans and designs.

You will have spent time completing technical work in either a mine planning or scheduling software package, ideally Deswik CAD or SCHED.

To succeed in this role you need to be pro-active and enthusiastic, able to positively influence those around you, ask the right questions and most importantly be keen to get underground regularly and understand what makes a design achievable and productive.

    What we offer :

As a staff employee of Glencore Mount Isa Mines, you are entitled to a comprehensive range of benefits aimed at attracting and retaining our most valuable asset, our people.

Benefits such as training, structured development (professional and personal) and recognition programs are critical to your long-term success.

We also offers a competitive remuneration package inclusive of 13% superannuation and a generous incentive scheme, such as rental assistance.

The business will support the successful candidate with relocation assistance to Mount Isa to work a family friendly 5 : 2, 4 : 3 roster.

Alternatively, options for remote work from various Queensland locations with regular site travel, or FIFO, may be considered for the right candidate.
