Appel de Genève / Geneva Call is looking for a Country Researcher : Yemen & Syria

is a neutral and impartial non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting respect byarmed non-State actors(ANSAs) for international humanitarian norms in armed conflict and other situations of violence, in particular those related to the protection of civilians.

Geneva Call is currently focusing its efforts on banning the use of anti-personnel mines, protecting children from the effects of armed conflict, prohibiting sexual violence in armed conflict and working towards the elimination of gender discrimination.

Appel de Genève / Geneva Call is a private, not-for-profit humanitarian organization founded in 1998 under Swiss law.

Geneva Call is looking for a Country Researcher : Yemen & Syria (100%) with a strong social science research profile.


The researcher will undertake research in the framework of the project focusing on Yemen & Syria.

Geneva Call is a partner organization in the Generating Respect Project. The aim of the project is to examine the influence of religious stakeholders on armed actors’ respect of humanitarian norms.


  • Conduct research (including literature reviews) and provide substantial input and expertise on armed actors (including ANSAs), religious leaders, international humanitarian law (IHL) and international human rights law (IHRL) with reference to Yemen and Syria.
  • Knowledge of the Yemen context is essential and of the Syria context highly desirable.

  • Conduct fieldwork (i.e. online and in-person interviews, depending of context and security situation) and lead data analysis.
  • Lead the drafting and participate in co-authoring research outputs (e.g. academic publications, reports, policy briefings, digital stories).
  • Support the local dissemination of research findings and outputs.

  • Coordinate with the Geneva Call country teams and provide updates for Geneva Call’s armed actors’ data base.
  • Coordinate the Geneva Call assigned research focal points.
  • Coordinate with Geneva Call field research partners (e.g. universities, think tanks).
  • Organise research related events such as workshops, conferences, roundtables as per needs.
  • Participate in bi-monthly project team meetings (over zoom), and in other project events as needed.
  • The researcher’s work will be supervised by the GRP Principal Investigator and Geneva Call’s Deputy Head of the Region Near and Middle East.

    Main qualifications

    The position is open to candidates who can evidence a strong research background and good knowledge of the Yemen and Syria contexts.

    Essential Master’s and / or PhD degree in social science (e.g. Political Science, Sociology, International Law, IHL, HRL, Law and Religion).

    EssentialPrevious experience of researching on social science related issues and contributing to research outputs. Please provide a list of publications / reports you have contributed to.

    EssentialAbility to write up applied research work for publication in a range of formats (academic articles, policy briefings, practitioner’s reports) and engage in public dissemination.

    EssentialKnowledge of the context (conflict dynamics, armed actors, religious actors etc) in Yemen. Knowledge of the Syria context is highly desirable.

    EssentialExcellent English and Arabic skills. DesirableExperience undertaking fieldwork (interviews). DesirablePrior experience working with / collaborating with an international NGO / humanitarian organisation.

    DesirablePrior experience working with / collaborating with an academic institution. DesirablePrior experience of interacting with religious leaders.

  • Location : Jordan (or elsewhere in the MENA region); with movements at field level and some travel to Europe.
