Assigned courses are facilitated and delivered as scheduled.

Courses on the learning platform are properly and technically maintained.

Students’ assignment is timely corrected, feedback and useful learning strategies are provided; and evaluation tasks are administered, assessed and graded on time.

Final evaluations results, students’ attendance and assignment for the following term are entered in the administrative platform by Monday week 13 of the language training term.

Assigned projects are completed by the established deadline and quality standards.

Majority of students successfully complete their course.

90% of students who completed the end-of-term feedback questionnaire express satisfaction with the courses delivered (rating : good or excellent).

Positive feedback from fellow teachers, clients and supervisors. Positive reception and responsiveness to feedback.

Work Location

Part time language teachers will undertake their assignments in Geneva. They should be

recruited within commuting distance of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

Expected duration

Duration of contract is 2 weeks for the summer courses and 13 weeks for the three regular terms. The duration of the contract is linked to the language training calendar and, specifically, to the length of courses and pedagogical activities assigned.

The yearly calendar and language learning terms dates are specified in the ST / IC on the Language Training Programme at UNOG.

Duties and Responsibilities

Background :

The Language Training Programme (LCP) of the Center for Learning and Multilingualism (CLM), Office of the United Nations at Geneva (UNOG), promotes linguistic balance and multilingualism within the Secretariat and improves the language abilities of staff, as mandated by the General Assembly in its resolutions 2480 B (XXIII), 43 / 224D and 50 / 11.

To do so the LTP offers language courses in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

A total of 14 language teachers, all of them staff members, are distributed across the six language programmes in the LTP to actively work in the development and the assessment of language skills offers aligned with organizational goals and priorities, and according to General Assembly mandates, UN policies and instructions on learning, and the Secretary General s recommendations on multilingualism.

To attend the large demand of language learning these language teachers are unable to cover, the LTP needs to hire additional teachers as individual contractors on a part-time basis.

The number of contractors to be hired varies depending on the demand.

The duties of part-time language teachers are to promote multilingualism and to help staff develop more effective work-related language skills in any of the six official languages.

For the part-time French teacher, these duties include the following :

A.TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT

Teaching French general language courses (all levels, all skills) and specialized high-level language skills courses, either face-to-face, online or in a blended format (including synchronous and asynchronous delivery).

Preparing classes and learning materials, in accordance with the curriculum established by the LTP, as well as preparing, monitoring and testing the devices and software required to support class delivery in any format.

Correcting assignments / homework.

Providing group and individual feedback on students’ progress. As well as advice on ways to develop their linguistic skills.

Administering, assessing and grading tests and exams, applying UN language standards.

Administering and updating the LTP e-learning platform (Moodle).

Carrying out the administrative duties directly related to their teaching, such as maintaining students’ attendance and grading records and communicating with students as needed.

B.ENGAGING IN PEDAGOGICAL

Developing and updating course curricula and materials (paper-based and online).

Preparing, updating and conducting assessments (exams, continuous assessment tasks, placement tests, etc.), including sharing knowledge of pedagogical and facilitation techniques.

Contributing to any other project related to language skills training activities.

Attending meetings and participating in group work sessions.

Qualifications / special skills

ACADEMIC QUALIFICATIONS :

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent degree) in language area studies, language teaching, applied linguistics, communication or education / pedagogy or related area is required.

Degrees with special emphasis on the theory and practice of teaching a second or foreign language to adult learners are desirable.

A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Post-degree training in second or foreign language teaching is highly desirable.

EXPERIENCE :

A minimum of four years of experience teaching French as a foreign or second language to adults in a multi-cultural setting (corporate, academic or other professional setting), is required.

Of these, at least three years of recent experience in curriculum development, language examination design, and / or language teacher training is required.

Experience using a variety of e-learning tools, learning management systems (i.e. Moodle) and online collaboration tools to teach a second or foreign language is desirable.

Experience at an international level in a multicultural environment is desirable.

LANGUAGES :

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in French, which must be the candidate's main language, is required (oral and written).

Knowledge of English is required. Knowledge of other UN official languages is an advantage.

Additional Information

Part-time teachers are paid per teaching hour.

Part-time teachers are hired per term. If the service delivered is satisfactory and depending on the demand, they can be hired for the following term or a future term.

The contract does not include medical insurance nor pension allowance.

Classes are held in the Palais des Nations in Geneva or online either from 8 to 9.30 a.m. or 12.30 to 2 p.m. twice a week per course.

The programme contains a mandatory online component of one hour a week in addition to the three face-to-face hours (delivered in-person or virtually).

Part-time teachers will be assigned between one and three courses (for a maximum of 12 teaching hours per week).
