Your tasks :
You will work on research projects funded by the InnoSuisse Agency as well as on basic science projects in the field of microstructure, local strains / stresses and crystal defect evolution in coatings and various structural materials using TEM / STEM and SEM techniques such as EBSD.
The successful candidate will also assist in the development of in-situ strains / stresses and defect mobility characterization techniques during mechanical testing.
Your profile :
You must hold a PhD in Materials Science, Physics or similar. A high level of motivation to work in close collaboration with industry, experimentalists and international and multidisciplinary research teams is essential.
Experience in TEM and FIB operation and in crystal orientation mapping in TEM are desirable. Knowledge in EBSD, TKD and micromechanics would be an asset.
You will work in close collaboration with several groups working in the field of synthesis of architectured composite materials such as multilayered coatings and laser structured hcp-alloys for implants.
Good knowledge of English (oral and written) is mandatory. Knowledge of German or French would be an advantage.
Empa in Thun offers an ideal working environment, with state-of-the art equipment (Two dual FIBs, multiple SEMs with several in-situ testing rigs, and a probe-corrected TITAN Themis TEM).
The city is situated in a beautiful area, next to Bern, in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Applicants are invited for a 1-year appointment (extendable for 2-3 years) starting from November 2020.
