Business Analyst (Data journalism, including Visualisation)
Purpose of the role
The Futures team is a new one within KTN. Its remit will be to :
make the case for policy and funding interventions in nascent, but high potential markets and to drive a positive policy environment for innovation
analyse a range of internal and external data / evidence to inform new areas of future activity for KTN and for other organisations
publish actionable insights for business, building KTN’s reputation as an organisation that understands business innovation theory and practice
To do this, we are recruiting an exceptional team of analysts focused on 1) influencing public policy and 2) analysing emerging market / econometric data and insights from our KTN sector teams and elsewhere to pro-actively generate evidence and recommendations to shape major new areas of work.
The role of data journalist / visualisation specialist will be part of this team. As an experienced data journalist, you will be well-versed in the tools, methods and practices involved in asking questions about both quantitative and qualitative information and how it might be used to make strategic policy and investment decisions for positive change.
You will be someone who has experience in commissioning as well as producing visualisations of data and intelligence in order to convey elegantly the key messages and recommendations from your investigations.
As such, we are interested in hiring a talented individual who can be both a hunter of stories held within information and also an effective storyteller conveying meaning and recommendations through clear, logical analysis.

Your team will be producing evidence and insight to support new potential areas of KTN activity, as well as making the case to develop new interventions where connecting innovators for positive change will generate positive economic, societal and environmental impact.
This role is expected to make a major contribution towards the publication of thought leadership on the subject of innovation.
You will also work closely with other colleagues in our Reach and Engagement team to effectively communicate our recommendations and policy outputs.
You will be expected to promote KTN Futures externally and work with other, like-minded organisations to effect policy change.
Role and Responsibilities
Generate ideas for data-driven stories emerging from KTN’s work (and external data) and for how they might be developed and visualised
Explore those ideas using statistical tools and present them to wider stakeholders from a non-statistical background
Report on and analyse data in a way that contributes to telling compelling stories across media
Collaborate with KTN sector teams, designers and KTN’s Communications team to bring those stories to publication
Explore and summarise data using relational database software
Visualise and to find patterns in spatial data using relevant software
Use statistical tools to identify significant data trends
Lead editorially on data projects as required and contribute to the internal improvement of KTN’s data capture and processing
Use skills and experience to advise on best approaches to data-led storytelling and the development and publication of data-led projects
Work on projects for KTN’s clients (predominantly public sector / Govt)
Deliver key aspects of KTN’s Company Plan
Work closely with KTN’s Executive team to provide data, intelligence and recommendations on important emerging areas of innovation
Experience and Qualifications
Qualified to degree level, or Level 6 equivalent. A qualification in data journalism / visualisation is ideal
A portfolio of published work using data, numbers and statistics in journalism and / or business strategy, including data-led stories and / or interactive graphics
Demonstrable experience of visualising data, using either tools or scripts
Experience of producing and developing data-driven digital content to a senior level within time and budget constraints
Demonstrable experience of working to tight deadlines
Evidence of aggregation of data to drive decision-making and supporting strategic business cases / policy recommendations
Desirable : general understanding of the UK political and policy environment, especially around innovation and industrial strategy
A highly motivated, self-starting and results oriented individual with a strong desire to deliver economic, societal, and environmental impacts through innovation
A good communicator with well-developed written and verbal skills, able to translate complex topics for broad audiences, including both business and policymakers
A good knowledge of some of the following spreadsheet software, SQL, and R
Experience of GIS or other mapping software
A good understanding of statistics and statistical analysis
A strong grasp of how to clean, parse and query data
Excellent organisation, prioritisation, and project management skills
Able to interact with and understand the needs and capabilities with stakeholders across a range of technical and / or industrial disciplines
A high level of trustworthiness, sometimes dealing with confidential information from the organisations we collect data from
Disciplined, reliable and adaptable with time management ability to deliver autonomously within an effective team
Highly numerate and analytical, with the ability to think strategically
This role has a salary between £38,000 and £50,000 pa.
28 days annual leave plus 8 bank holidays, pro rata.
