The Future Circular Collider Study FCC explores different designs of circular colliders for the post-LHC era. Reaching higher energies and unprecedented luminosities would allow us to explore the fundamental laws of nature and probe yet unexplained observations.

A circular particle accelerator is a viable option to achieve this goal within the 21st century. Building such a machine requires a well-focused technology R&D program, the development of entirely new technologies and the industrialization of novel materials, and a committed science community.

PSI, as a member of CHART Swiss Accelerator Research and Technology Center, is a partner in this effort, focusing its R&D, among others, on superconducting magnet technology, for which we are looking for an

Superconducting magnets

Your tasks

You will be part of a young research group, joining the team at the time of establishment of a new superconducting-magnet laboratory at PSI.

Over a first period, you will develop enabling technologies that make coils wound from ReBCO tapes viable for applications in accelerators.

In the second period, you will design and construct a magnet prototype according to the strategic needs of the FCC design study and PSI.

In particular you will :

  • Design and build test coils in collaboration with CERN and other partners
  • Specify, procure, and commission R&D infrastructure and construction tooling
  • Design a prototype HTS magnet for a specific application
  • Build and instrument test coils and the magnet prototype and analyze test results

    Skills / Qualifications

    Your profile

    You have a Masters or PhD degree in applied physics, electrical or mechanical engineering, and several years of experience in the design and construction of superconducting magnets.

    You routinely used ANSYS, Comsol, or similar tools. Ideally, you have worked on coils wound from ReBCO tapes before. As a team-oriented and communicative person you enjoy working in an interdisciplinary group.

    You assume responsibility, show initiative and combine creativity and out-of-the-box thinking with pragmatism and results-orientation.

    Good knowledge of English is mandatory; knowledge of German is a plus.
