Background : Over the past 88 years, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has developed unparalleled expertise in responding to emergencies and helping uprooted communities to rebuild.

The IRC is on the ground in more than 40 countries, providing emergency relief, relocating refugees and rebuilding lives in the wake of disaster.

The IRC Geneva office has a team of 17 staff working on sector-specific issues, including health, protection, governance, plus core functions such as policy and advocacy and grants management.

Internship Overview : The IRC Geneva intern will work closely with the Head of office and other Geneva colleagues. S / he will engage with colleagues from across the organization to raise the profile of IRC Geneva, both internally and with external stakeholders.

The intern will also help with general office coordination and support requests from IRC country programs.

Main Tasks :

  • Support internal and external communications on IRC Geneva; seek opportunities to raise the profile of the office in the Geneva humanitarian community.
  • Support Geneva-based advocacy efforts, helping organize advocacy or coordination meetings in Geneva, either individually as IRC or jointly with other INGOs;
  • follow up on related logistical requirements, invitations and promotion of the event(s).

  • Follow Geneva-based discussions held by ICVA and individual INGOs, as needed. Take and share meeting notes, if necessary.
  • Key Working Relationships :

    Position reports to : Head of Office / Director of Policy and Advocacy

    Position directly supervises : Not applicable

    Internal contacts : IRC Geneva Office colleagues; Technical Units; International Programs Department; Communications and Policy & Advocacy departments.

    External contacts : ICVA working groups, Geneva-based humanitarian coalitions, peer INGOs.

    Internship Requirements :

    Education :

  • Graduate degree in relevant field such as Communications, Journalism or related field.
  • Work experience :

  • Prefer some humanitarian or development experience, either in Geneva or in the field.
  • Proven journalistic experience in English would be a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated skills and competencies :

  • Strong English writing skills (native speaker level); spoken French would be desirable
  • Editing and social media skills
  • Knowledge of humanitarian aid and refugee issues
  • Excellent organizing skills and ability to follow up on logistical issues with limited guidance
  • Ability and willingness to be part of a global team, working with different time zones and sometimes after hours.
  • Working Environment : Standard office work environment. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, the intern will work remotely about half of the time and attend external meetings when feasible.
