The function of the Director International Patient Advocacy is fundamental to both execution of our Clinical Development programs and building appropriate connections with the external medical community and patient advocacy groups.

The Director, International Patient Advocacy position is focused on creating and maintaining strong relationships with our international patient communities and demonstrating Arena’s deep commitment to patients.

The qualified person will implement and translate the global patient advocacy strategy and programs in the region and will be accountable for positioning Arena as a preferred partner for patient organizations within our therapeutic areas and the defined region.

What you’ll dive into

  • International Medical Affairs team : You will cooperate with the International Medical Affairs team and will oversee all patient-
  • facing programs across clinical development and Arena’s commercial business. Of importance is the responsibility to represent the patient perspective as an active participant of international cross-

    departmental and cross-functional working teams, and to develop innovative solutions and programs to meet the dynamic needs of our patient communities.

  • Support Global Overall Advocacy Strategy : You will define and provide the mission and vision of the international patient advocacy and community relations team, and implement and support the global overall advocacy strategy as applies to Arena within our therapeutic areas.
  • Key contact for patient communities : You will serve as primary point of contact to build and maintain collaborative, mutually beneficial partnerships with our patient communities and work to prioritize the groups and organizations with which to partner within the defined region.
  • Advocacy relations and engagement of patients : You will engage patient communities for feedback regarding critical drug development and commercialization decisions.
  • By defining, implementing and standardizing best practices in advocacy relations across Arena s therapeutic areas and design and creating local processes, solutions, and tools that will contribute to the effectiveness and success of patient advocacy plan.

  • Commitment to patients : You ensure Arena’s commitment to patients is visible at various conferences within the region and enhance the patient-
  • centric culture within the company.

  • Support International Team : You provide regional support to other departments including Clinical Development, Clinical Operations, Regulatory Affairs, and Commercial.
  • Providing key insights for the region on the pulse of the patient community to inform strategic planning. Supporting that all international employees at Arena have an opportunity to learn about the patient perspective and Arena's commitment to the patients we serve is a key responsibility.

  • Compliance : You work compliantly in interactions with patient advocates, patients, families, caregivers and other relevant parties per internal and external guidelines.
  • What we expect

    Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific or clinical discipline. Advanced degree preferred (e.g., MD, PharmD, MSN, PhD).

    Equivalent combination of education and applicable job experience may be considered.

  • 7+ years of progressive work experience in the pharmaceutical / biotech industry and / or a related patient focused organization
  • 5+ years of patient advocacy experience required
  • Preferred experience in the Gastroenterology therapeutic area
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills with a proven ability to build relationships with diverse groups of people and audiences.
  • Ability to build and influence effective working relationships with key internal stakeholders, including Marketing, Medical Affairs colleagues and Corporate Communications.

  • Proficient in event planning, industry standards and regulations, with a strong awareness of emerging trends around patient-
  • centered research and technology, patient experience, and patient-reported outcomes.

  • Familiarity with the drug development process and commercialization and understanding of brand and franchise needs.
  • Proven understanding of key trends in both internal and external environment with an impact on patient and consumer engagement, specifically in areas that affect political and social norms
  • Demonstrated understanding of the needs and behaviors of patients living with various diseases or conditions and sensitivity to diverse groups of people.
  • Ability to summarize complex medical and scientific concepts using basic terms to successfully communicate to patient / advocate audiences
  • Solid understanding of the applicable regulatory environment and industry standards
  • Fluent in English and preferably other language(s) with excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills, and adept at creating and communicating a clear vision and purpose
  • Ability to travel up to 40% (internationally)
