The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading life sciences institutes in the world. It consists of 30 groups and 500 employees that research how molecules and cells create life, spanning the scale from atom to organism.

Founded in 1971, the Biozentrum has been the birthplace of many fundamental discoveries in biology and medicine, spawning several Nobel Laureates.

The new BSL-3 Facility at the Biozentrum is searching for a highly motivated 80-100% laboratory technician.

Your position

The successful applicant will join the new Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) Facility at the Biozentrum, where research on highly pathogenic micro-organisms will be conducted.

Main responsibilities include (i) general support functions and maintenance of the Facility (approximately 40% of the time) (ii) training of new users to the specific Biosafety standards required for work at BSL3 (approximately 10% of the time) (iii) the support of PhD students and postdocs in ongoing BSL-3 research activities of the Dehio lab, studying the intracellular lifecycle of the bacterial pathogen Brucella (approximately 50% of working time).

About 50% of the work will be directly linked to working under BSL-3 containment.

Your profile

Applicants should have a degree as "Laborant / in" or a Bachelor Degree in Biology or related topics. At least two years' experience working with techniques in infection microbiology, cell culture, and molecular biology is required.

Experience with BSL-3 environment constitutes a clear asset. Familiarity with animal experimentation (mice) or microscopy techniques would be of advantage.

The role requires diligence, excellent organizational and communication skills, and the ability to multi-task. The applicant should enjoy working as a team member as well as independently.

Enthusiasm and motivation for biological research are critical. The primary language of the laboratory and the Biozentrum is English.
