TotalEnergies Gas and Power (TGP) is the trading arm of TotalEnergies in the field of low carbon energies (mainly gas, LNG and power).

As such, it operates in fast-evolving market dynamics influenced by internal and external factors that require constant adaptation and evolution.

Uncertainties specific to the trading environment (volatility of prices, supply & demand mismatches) are coupled with those coming from the broader energy sector (climate change policies, changes in the energy mix, developments of new energy sources, etc).

In such context, TGP helps to ensure growth and profitability to a key segment of the business in order to reach the objective of Carbon Neutrality by 2050.

We are looking to hire an experienced risk professional to join our Middle Office team as Head of GPE (Gas, Power, Emissions) Market Risk, supporting marketing, trading, transportation, storage and other commercial activities necessary to optimize market access for the Company's gas and power energy assets portfolio.

The Operational Result of GPE desk for 2019 was circa 1 Billion dollars, which was measured and controlled by the Middle Office.

The counterparties of the Trading Division include E&P affiliates (E&P UK, E&P Norway, NLNG, ), downstream affiliates (RC, TDE, Lampiris, TotalFlex, ) and all the main Energy companies in Europe, US, Middle East and Asia.

What you will do

As part of the Global Middle Office Organisation the Head of GPE Market Risk’s activities involve managing a team of supervisors and analysts and contributing to Risk Control processes of the entities covered by the Global team.

You will report to global head of market risk.

You will manage the activity of the gas and power market risk groups. The teams are spread in several locations, their responsibility is to measure, analyse and monitor the P&L, market exposure of Trading Desks of the Trading Direction (12 analysts and supervisors).

You will be responsible for the reporting of risks and P&L for the trading desk under his responsibility (Global gas trading, Global Power trading, power asset desk, short term power desks).

Additionally, you will also be responsible for developing systems and processes in line with trading and regulatory requirements and to ensures communication with other departments (Front Office, operations, Back Office, trading systems, finance )

Key responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision of Middle Office supervisors; manage Middle Office department activities, staffing resources, training and development, and performance appraisals for all direct reports;
  • Ensures the teams under his leadership are able to meet their reporting deadline and their output and quality of support to the business meets the highest standards.
  • Act as the primary liaison for all trading enquiries; provide help to the traders to model complex trades in the BOOK
  • Work closely with Back Office, Finance, Credit, Legal, and Internal Control to ensure the global performance of the front to back to finance processes with high standard of control and in respect with risks policy and limits.
  • Work in close cooperation with Front Office to facilitate the continuing growth of the business by providing accurate information on the potential impact of transactions on mark-to-market and risks, and design new set up, tools and procedures for managing new business.
  • Contribute to the drafting of new risk policies.

  • Ensure that all required SOX controls are performed on time and in a proper manner;
  • Propose ant implement new solutions to improve processes, controls and decision making
  • Liaise with IT and Digital departments to ensure the enhancement of the trading software to meet business needs;
  • Leverage the global risk control setup by constantly seek to allocate task at the best location to improve global team efficiency and offer support to other trading offices.
  • Observe & document operational risk incidents including near miss & failure events
  • Candidate profile

  • Master’s degree in accounting, finance, mathematics, or business-related major;
  • Strong understanding of the energy industry, commodity trading, risk analysis, and modern finance; only applicants with power trading experience will be considered
  • Comprehensive understanding of risk management methodologies and valuation models;
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mid-office commodity trading organization or on a commodity trading team; Prior supervisory experience preferred;
  • Being fluent in English is essential for this position. Sound verbal and written communication with great ability to convince in English is required.
  • Good programming skills (Python or VBA).
  • High levels of numeracy and computer literacy.
  • High degree of accuracy and efficiency under set deadlines.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • High levels of flexibility with regard working hours.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
