EarlhamCollege invites applications for a full-time, two year Visiting AssistantProfessor position beginning in the Fall 2019.
The College seeks an individualwho can contribute to the curricula of both Earlham's Computer Sciencedepartment and either the Mathematics or Physics & Astronomy departments.
The College's goal is to find a person who is passionate about teaching brightand motivated undergraduates in lecture, seminar, laboratory and researchvenues at a selective liberal arts college.
PrimaryDuties & Responsibilities
Thesuccessful candidate will have a teaching load of three courses per semester(or the equivalent thereof), and will teach in Computer Science and eitherMathematics or Physics & Astronomy.
Given the shared nature of thisposition and the flexibility of our current faculty, the candidate will havethe opportunity to choose from a range of courses in consultation with theappropriate departments.
These could include introductory courses and labs, aswell as advanced courses and seminars in the candidate’s area of interest.
Departmental& Institutional Information
Eachof the three departments is a small, dynamic group. Together, the departmentscomprise 11 full-time teaching faculty members.
Typical class sizes are small,with upper-level courses usually ranging in size from 7 to 25 students. Theyhave technical support personnel, administrative support, and a wide range ofresearch programs.
Earlham's research facilities include local clustercomputing resources, a teaching observatory, a natural history museum with aplanetarium, and dedicated research laboratory space.
Inaddition to traditional research, Earlham students and faculty gain practicalexperience in its Applied Groups working in such domains as systemadministration and energy monitoring.
The College's teaching and researchfacilities are housed in the Center for Science and Technology, designed specificallyfor science and mathematics education and research.
College support, includingconference travel funding, summer research funds, faculty development funds,and assistance with applications for external grants, may be available tosuccessful candidates who wish to engage in scholarly activities.
Preferencewill go to applicants who have completed (or are nearing completion of) a Ph.D.in one of the three fields (Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics) or in aclosely related field.
Earlham holds excellence in teaching as its mostimportant criterion; therefore applications should demonstrate a stronginterest in teaching at the undergraduate level.
Candidates with experience inlaboratories and / or with computer hardware are especially encouraged to apply,although all specializations will be considered.
