Prof. Xavier Castañer invites applications for a PhD student / graduate assistant position at the Department of Strategy, Globalization and Society at HEC Lausanne.

The HEC Lausanne PhD program in management welcomes individuals motivated and capable of becoming competent in conducting and publishing top-

rate scientific research. The program provides a rigorous and in-depth course of study in theory building and advanced research techniques (quantitative & qualitative) as well as specialized courses in the student's field of interest (in this case, strategy and organizational theory).

Contract length : 1 year, renewable 2 x 2 years, maximum 5 years

Activity rate : 100%

Salary : 65'000 CHF (first year) - 75'800 CHF (fifith year)

Required profile

  • A master’s degree in Management or Economics or related field
  • Fluency in English (knowledge of French is appreciated)
  • Willingness to develop a thesis in the field of Strategy or Organizational Theory. Potential candidates should propose a topic related to strategy and / or organizational theory or be interested in one or several of the topics Prof.
  • Castañer’s current research :

  • Corporate’ governance and strategy :
  • Determinants and consequences of organizations’ ownership composition : why and when do certain investors join the ownership of a corporation?
  • What are the consequences of the presence of a certain mix of owners in the governance and strategy of an organization?

  • The governance of not-for profit and governmental organizations : what are their specificities? How can these organizations be better governed?
  • Cross-sectoral partnerships : How do managers of cross-sectoral partnerships deal with potential and actual sectoral logics’ clashes?
  • How should / do they decide about whether and when to expand membership versus developing or acquiring a resource?

  • Acquisition strategy and implementation
  • Leadership, creativity and innovation within organizations : How do individuals in teams which collectively exhibit disciplinary diversity generate novel and useful ideas?
  • How do top decision-makers (in cultural organizations) cope with internal and external crises?

    Your responsibilities

  • 50% of the position’s time will be dedicated to the completion of doctoral studies
  • 50% of the position’s time will be dedicated to providing teaching and research support for Prof. Castañer
  • The Department of Strategy, Globalization and Society

    The members of the Department of Strategy, Globalization and Society conduct research on the sources of organizations’ long-

    term competitive advantage and sustainable performance. A founding belief of our department is that organizational strategies in a globalized world often have to take into account not only market dimensions (competition, price, differentiation, innovation, M&As, etc.

    but also nonmarket dimensions (environmental aspects, regulation, macroeconomic policies, politics, media, ethical considerations, etc.).

    Members of the Department include Jean-Philippe Bonardi, Olivier Cadot, Xavier Castañer, Annamaria Conti, Patrick Haack, José Mata, Guido Palazzo, Jeffrey Petty, and Déborah Philippe, and have published in leading international outlets such as the Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, American Economic Review, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Research Policy or Strategic Management Journal.
