Primary Responsibilities and Accountabilities
You assist the Biomarker and Experimental Medicine Leader (BEML) in setting up the Translational and Clinical Biomarker strategy for projects in I2O / Ophthalmology utilizing specific methods that include but are not limited to genetics, proteomics, molecular pathology, imaging, and functional assessments.
You support the implementation of activities into clinical development for designated projects that include consideration for target engagement, Proof of Mechanism, Proof of Concept, identification of responsive patient populations, safety and pharmacodiagnostic activities.
Under the mentoring of the BEML, you deliver through appropriate leadership, direction and action, the discovery, development, validation and appropriate utilization of Biomarkers (BMs), and diagnostic tools during drug development.
You collaborate with internal, academic, and external industry based experts and providers who are focusing on translational and experimental medicine in relevant ophthalmic diseases.
You work closely with study, clinical and project teams to ensure access to state of the art thinking on appropriate BM technologies, recognizing the scientific and clinical basis, the validation status, and the statistical issues related to the proposed BMs
Your specific duties include the planning, communication and implementation of agreed BM strategies, the contribution to the development of study protocols and informed consent forms, planning and monitoring of sample collection, storage and use, overseeing assay development, analysis of samples, and interpretation of results and due communication to stakeholders.
Experience, Skills, Knowledge
PhD or MD with good knowledge about the biology and pathomechanisms underlying major retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic complications of the eye including diabetic retinopathy or diabetic macular edema (Postdoc level)
Strong interest in translational medicine, clinical development and in the application of various biomarker modalities to assist drug development in ophthalmic diseases.
Experience on ethical aspects for the collection and use of human specimens from human donors and patients for research purposes
Generation, maintenance and use of databases for investigation of human tissues and fluids
Ability to be a team member and a team leader, good interpersonal skills
Effectiveness when operating within matrix structures
Expertise and consistent success in scientific research and / or clinical practice (as evidenced by appropriate higher qualifications, publication and relevant specialist accreditation)
Effective verbal and written communication skills in English
Excellent planning and organisational skills
High level of initiative and ability to work independently
