As Head of Vivarium Operations in Basel for Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) Scientific Operations Laboratory Animal Services, you will manage a high quality vivarium operation program and facilities.
You will be a member of the site Laboratory Animal Services leadership team and have an important role building and executing a comprehensive strategy for Laboratory Animal Services.
You'll partner with 2 colleague groups in Laboratory Animal Services (Veterinary Services and Technical Services) to optimize cross-
line operational efficiency and set staff project priorities to improve productivity through effective management practices.

Line manage 3 supervisors that have a total of 15 line reports
Proactively resource and metric animal care and study support through partnerships with Disease Areas and Laboratory Animal Services Study Support group
Ensure facility space, equipment and associated resources are efficiently deployed with rapidly changing vivarium / research needs.
Main responsibilities :
Ensure maintenance & future development of Vivarium Operations programs to align the service portfolio to meet the needs of the evolving in vivo research community in Basel at the Novartis HQ Campus
Continually evolve the campus vivarium to meet changing research needs (strategic vision and execution of animal facilities design, infrastructure and renovations)
Ensure Vivarium Operations alignment with other core Laboratory Animal Services (Veterinary Services & Technical Services) and Scientific Operations
Manage operational budget, expenses and projections
Assure the care and welfare of laboratory animals is provided in accordance with local regulations and AAALAC International guidelines
Provide leadership to Vivarium Operations to maximize the contribution of the technical staff to the animal care program and to meet Laboratory Animal Services' strategic objectives on culture and colleague development
Manage talent through focused colleague career development and performance management
Responsible for development and implementation of appropriate quality assurance programs, planning and maintenance of operating budgets, purchase of capital equipment and supplies and effective management of physical resources within Laboratory Animal Services
Participate in the direction of a centralized Laboratory Animal Services program of occupational health and safety for all individuals having significant contact with research animals
Interface with scientific staff in NIBR to refine animal use methodologies, reduce animal use numbers when appropriate, and explore alternatives to animal use whenever possible
Lead in operational excellence by defining metrics and key performance indicators at Basel and in collaboration with other Laboratory Animal Services sites
Assess development and implementation of enhanced and / or new technologies, equipment and procedures for application to the work environment.
Back-up responsibilities for the Global Head Laboratory Animal Services as needed
Bachelor degree in Science, Veterinary-related field, or equivalent. Advanced degrees such as DVM, PhD, MS, and / or MBA in a related field are desirable.
ACLAM, LATg and / or CMAR or other specialty certifications desirable
Fluent / advanced / business-level German and English
Demonstrated supervisory and managerial experience in a laboratory animal setting - evidence of effectively developing LAS staff / technicians, working successfully with scientific and non-
scientific peers, stakeholders and management
Previous hands-on experience from Vivarium Operations - credible expertise of managing / leading operational processes and infrastructure, a program of substantial breadth and complexity, with experience in budgets, facility planning, and project execution
