About the Role

Are you eager to learn and understand more about future mortality trends and explore medical, economic, societal and lifestyle drivers that could impact our life&health portfolios in the long-term future?

Do you want to experience being a part of the process that decides how Swiss Re costs its long-term mortality and longevity business and allocates capital to the risk pools in key markets?

One of the responsibilities of the Life & Behaviour R&D team is the production and application of research in support of the life & health business units within Swiss Re.

We are looking for a motivated individual to join our team to assist us in a project that aims at conducting research to better understand current morbidity and mortality trends and identify and assess underlying drivers to project future long-term mortality developments in different countries.

In further details the research will include :

  • Exploring the difference in old age morbidity and mortality trends in general and economically wealthier / insured populations within Swiss Re's key markets.
  • Assess key societal, technological and behavioral drivers of future morbidity / mortality developments.
  • Exploring the impact of cohort effects on mortality trends.
  • Support analysis of insurance industry benchmark studies on long-term mortality trends.
  • Collect views on future old age mortality trends from external experts.
  • You will be encouraged to work independently but will of course have support and mentorship from the project coach and project sponsor and learn from others in the team as well.

    About the Team

    The global Life & Behaviour R&D team is an international multidisciplinary research team that works on a broad range of topics such as mortality developments, genomics, ageing, advancement in medicines & technology and behavioural research.

    We are a team from a range of scientific, medical and actuarial backgrounds with strong academic and business experience.

    We identify and analyse structured / unstructured datasets throughout the world that provide insights on health trends and developments.

    We develop insights on behavioural research through targeted interventions at different stages in the insurance journey.

    We provide thought leadership and client services within and outside Swiss Re to inform capital steering, improve underwriting decisions and product pricing assumptions, as well as capacity- and risk limit management.

    We establish effective partnerships and collaborations with universities, data providers and research organisations on a global basis.

    About You

  • You are a student or recent graduate in bio-medical research, epidemiology, health services research, or medical statistics.
  • You have already gained some experience or understanding of the medical, economic, societal and lifestyle drivers that impact morbidity / mortality would be highly preferable.
  • Experience in medical and health data analytics and working with large health and / or medical data sets are a plus.
  • You love working independently and have experience in managing, prioritising and time management of multiple tasks.
  • Excellent oral & written English
  • Excellent presentation skills (incl. PowerPoint) : You would also need to communicate your findings to the wider Life & Health community at Swiss Re and actively contribute to the discussion in forming a view on future mortality trends.
  • Duration of internship : 4 months, starting March 2020
