Org. Setting and Reporting This position is located in the Meetings, Documents and Publications Unit (MDPU), External Outreach Service (EOS), Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Geneva.

The incumbent reports to the Head of Unit. Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Head of the Meetings, Documents and Publications Unit (MDPU), the incumbent :

  • Edits complex or politically sensitive material, without revision, to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice;
  • in particular, edits pre-, in- and post-session documents of the General Assembly, Human Rights Council and its subsidiary bodies, including the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review, and of the human rights treaty bodies;
  • Edits Human Rights Council resolutions, including amendments and revisions, and liaises with sponsors (Permanent Missions);
  • assists in drawing up guidelines for editors, especially on the editing of resolutions; manages the team of editors editing the draft resolutions, organizes their work, enforces deadlines, provides guidance and revises their work;
  • Provides authors, staff of substantive units and delegations with advice on matters concerning editorial policy and practice and assist them in the preparation of manuscripts;
  • Consults with author Sections and carries out research to clarify ambiguities and rectify substantive errors;
  • Carries out more extensive editing when required, including rewriting, abridging and restructuring texts for greater readability and better logical sequence;
  • Supervises contractors editing OHCHR publications, ensuring consistency of OHCHR publications and their accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity with United Nations standards, policy and practice;
  • Performs such other duties as may be directed by the Chief of Service and the Unit Head; prepares and implements a personal work plan which is coherent with the Unit’s work plan;
  • Monitors progress and reports to the Head of the Unit, takes action to minimise delays; seeks maximum performance from oneself and others;
  • identifies own training requirements and development needs; prepares expenditure requests and monitors expenditures against budget allocation;
  • identifies and draws to management attention potential cost overruns and under spends. Competencies PROFESSIONALISM : Knowledge of editorial policies, practices and research techniques.

    Solid writing and analytical abilities with sensitivity to nuance. Ability to spot errors and inconsistencies in a text.

  • establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect; identifies clients' needs and matches them to appropriate solutions;
  • monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients' environment to keep informed and anticipate problems; keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects;
  • meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

  • MANAGING PERFORMANCE : Delegates the appropriate responsibility, accountability and decision-making authority; makes sure that roles, responsibilities and reporting lines are clear to each staff member;
  • accurately judges the amount of time and resources needed to accomplish a task and matches task to skills; monitors progress against milestones and deadlines;
  • regularly discusses performance and provides feedback and coaching to staff.

  • JUDGEMENT / DECISION-MAKING : Identifies the key issues in a complex situation, and comes to the heart of the problem quickly;
  • gathers relevant information before making a decision; considers positive and negative impacts of decisions prior to making them;
  • takes decisions with an eye to the impact on others and on the Organization; proposes a course of action or makes a recommendation based on all available information;
  • checks assumptions against facts; determines the actions proposed will satisfy the expressed and underlying needs for the decision;
  • makes tough decisions when necessary. Education A first-level degree from a university or institution of equivalent status;
  • must have passed the United Nations Competitive Examination for English Editors or the combined United Nations Competitive Examination for English Translators / Précis-

    writers, Editors, Verbatim Reporters and Copy Preparers / Proofreaders / Production Editors. Work Experience A minimum of five (5) years of experience in editing, including three years of experience in editing within the United Nations common system.

    Experience in the editing of human rights documentation and in the editing of resolutions is required. Languages Fluency in English, which must be the candidate's main language, and knowledge of at least two other official languages, as tested by one of the above-

    mentioned United Nations Language Competitive Examinations, are required. Assessment Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-

    based interview. Special Notice Extension of the appointment is subject to extension of the mandate and / or the availability of the funds.

    Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.

    Candidates who have committed crimes other than minor traffic offences may not be considered for employment.
