Many of these projects, which include new biological entities, are for medicines that could significantly advance treatment standards for patients worldwide.

We are looking for a Senior Expert to join the Analytical Characterization (AC) team in Basel, Switzerland. Within analytical characterization in biologics development, Novartis new biological entities (NBEs) are supported from proof-of-concept in human () to commercialization and up to life-cycle management activities.

AC applies a wide range of physico-chemical analytical techniques to characterize the biopharmaceutical products with regards to their purity, identity, and structural integrity.

The AC team is an integral part of the global Analytical Development unit, which is part of Novartis Technical Research and Development (TRD).

The applicant will be part of the mass spectrometry group working in a highly collaborative and scientific environment. The successful applicant will work in close interaction with other experts in the analytical community.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to :

  • Characterization of therapeutic proteins, their post-translational modifications, degradation products and impurities () by mass spectrometry (MS) using innovative LC-MS equipment
  • Comparability assessment of drug substances / drug products
  • Development of MS related methods and implementation of new technologies for the effective characterization of biopharmaceuticals
  • Maintenance and qualification of lab equipment Position Title : Senior Expert Mass Spectrometry (80-100%) Minimum requirements : What you'll bring to the role :
  • PhD in Biochemistry, analytical chemistry or related field. Minimum of 2 years for PhD, 6 years for Master of Science or 12 years for Bachelor of Science / apprenticeship of directly related scientific experience.
  • Hands-on experience in mass spectrometry based characterization of , therapeutic proteins and / or host cell proteins in an industrial setting.
  • Expert theoretical and practical knowledge of pioneering ESI-Q-TOF, Orbitrap and MALDI-TOF MS technologies, CID / HCD / ETD fragmentation techniques, as well as MS data processing software solutions (, Masslynx, Refiner MS, Analyst, GPMAW, Maxquant, Skyline).
  • Expert theoretical and practical knowledge of UHPLC and / or nano-LC systems (™ 1200)
  • Advanced understanding of multi-attribute-method (MAM) and native MS methods
  • Ability to interpret and present scientific information critically and objectively. Strong scientific project management and leadership skills.
  • Strong inter-personal skills ensuring close collaboration with multiple teams on a global level, effective communication with internal and external partners, and the ability to work in international teams.
  • Advanced scientific / technical writing skills, detailed understanding of biopharmaceutical drug development activities and processes as well as good understanding of regulatory expectations.
