General Description

The Senior Director, Data Privacy and Security will lead the design, development and implementation of BeiGene’s Global Privacy Program, with special focus on the Company’s United States (US), European, China, APAC and new markets operations.

Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer and having managerial responsibility for members of the Legal and Compliance Team dedicated to privacy matters, the newly created role of Senior Director, Data Privacy and Security will serve as the Company’s Data Protection Officer and play a critical role in leading the Company’s development and implementation of data privacy and security policies, procedures, training programs, and technology solutions.

In addition, this role will work with other members of BeiGene’s Legal and Compliance and IT teams on data privacy and security-related matters, including auditing and monitoring activities, investigations and data incident responses, responses to data subject requests, and the design of scalable technology solutions and tools to support the continued growth of BeiGene with its existing operations in the United States, Europe, China, APAC and in new markets and regions.

The position is based in BeiGene’s Basel, Switzerland office location. Essential Functions of the job : Serve as the Data Protection Officer for the Company, and in this capacity represent the Company in all of its interactions with data protection authorities.

Lead the design and implementation of a cohesive global privacy policy architecture to facilitate consistent adoption and pull-through of privacy compliance principles and standards at the country, region, state and local level.

Manage short and long-term Global Privacy Program staffing needs, utilizing a mixture of FTE resources, Privacy Champions or Liaisons within key data processing Company functions, and outside counsel and vendors.

Develop and maintain comprehensive and practical privacy policies, procedures, forms and templates to support the operation of the Company’s Global Privacy Program in the U.

  • S., Europe, China, APAC and new markets. In collaboration with other members of the Legal and Compliance Team, proactively identify emerging legal and regulatory issues, industry trends and practices applicable to data privacy and security;
  • and advise on the adoption of new, or revision of existing, policies and procedures to ensure the continued effectiveness of the Global Privacy Program.

    Assess the potential impact of Commercial, Medical, Clinical Development, G&A and other functional group initiatives to the Global Privacy Program and support the design and implementation of policies, procedures, processes and systems to manage identified risk areas effectively.

    Establish clear and consistent policies and procedures for conducting Data Protection Impact Assessments, vendor due diligence audits, handling of Data Subject Access Requests, and where required, data breach notifications to data subjects and applicable data protection authorities.

    Partner with the Company’s IT team to select, implement and oversee data privacy and security systems, tools and technology solutions to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of an annual Company Data Inventory so that applicable data processing activities are identified and proper localization or transfer mechanisms are implemented.

    Lead the design and delivery of a comprehensive, role-based data privacy and security compliance training program that is tailored to the needs and activities of BeiGene employees and collaborators.

    Support the design of data privacy and security monitoring and audit programs based on Company policy requirements, industry risk areas and trends, and incorporate feedback and observations into existing or new policies and procedures where appropriate.

    Partner with internal (e.g., Legal, Finance, IT, Quality, Human Resources) and external (e.g., outside counsel, advisory consultants) stakeholders on the design and execution of cross-functional projects (e.

    g., risk assessments, audits) supporting Global Privacy Program goals and objectives. Establish and lead a Company Data Protection Committee to ensure sufficient awareness and support for Global Privacy Program goals and initiatives.

    Provide regular Global Privacy Program reports and presentations and other communications for diverse Company audiences, including the Compliance Committee, Executive Committee, country management teams, and the Board of Directors.

    Requirements : Bachelor’s Degree (life sciences, law, public policy, marketing, business, education, or related discipline preferred).

    Graduate-level Degree strongly preferred (JD, MBA, or related discipline) and lAPP certifications such as CIPP / US, CIPP / IT or CIPP / M preferred.

    A minimum of 10+ years of experience working on relevant data privacy and security matters, ideally in the pharmaceutical industry and / or a nationally recognized law firm or consulting practice.

    Strong working knowledge and experience with privacy and data protection laws (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA and the China Cybersecurity Law).

    Biopharmaceutical or other life sciences experience preferred. Experience in designing, building, and implementing a successful privacy and security program in a fast-paced, global company environment.

    Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including contract, policy and procedure drafting skills, and presentation and project management skills.

    Demonstrated ability to build solid relationships and make connections across the organization. Effective leadership and managerial skills, together with the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with enthusiasm and accountability.

    Customer First customer service orientation, putting the customer at the center of all business activities. Computer Skills : PC, including MS Office Suite and privacy technologies and platforms Travel : 10-25% Education Required : Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years of relevant data privacy and security experience.
