Ph.D Position - Internet of Things (Law and Ethics)
An increasing number of organizations invest in biosensors and other wearable computing devices (Internet of Things - IoT) for improving the well-being of their personnel or as means for anticipating potential health and safety risks at work.
The use of IoT at the workplace may be useful if purposefully used, but it is not unproblematic, since sensors create a massive data trail that organizations may harness and use for purposes other than occupational health or against the good of the personnel.
This position is part of an interdisciplinary project ( Internet of things for occupational health : practical, ethical, and legal Issues ) funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
Our aim is to investigate, from three perspectives (information systems, legal, and ethical) the opportunities and risks when IoT is introduced in the workplace.
The applicant will perform analyses of the legal and ethical issues related to the use of IoT for health.

We are looking for an enthusiastic doctoral researcher with a background in law and ethics, or at least a strong interest in ethics.
The work will focus on privacy-by-design of IoT in occupational health settings.
The ideal candidate is sensitive to interdisciplinary work. She or he is interested in conducting legal analysis and in acquiring a professional profile in biomedical ethics.
She-he will analyse and evaluate the Swiss legal framework applicable to the use of IoT. She-he will explore the ethical issues and dilemmas for employees and for managers resulting from incoherencies between individual values and expectations, organizational system, social norms, and legal duties.
Her-his tasks will involve legal text analysis, empirical studies, and applied philosophy.
The PhD student will be co-supervised by a legal scholar, Sophie Weerts, and an ethicist, Christine Clavien and conduct her-his research at the IDHEAP in the faculty of Law, Criminal Justice and Public Administration (Lausanne University) and the iEH2.
Geneva University). Depending on her-his background, the candidate will be integrated in the Doctoral school in biomedical sciences or in the Doctoral school in Public administration
This is a fixed term, 100% position for 4 years with an anticipated start date in summer 2020.
